#4 – Now we’re getting skeptical!

Screen CaptureLast night we haScreen Capture 2d one of the most successful VirtualDS meetings yet! We had a great turnout despite the odd time and had quite a few first timers. Tokbox managed to mostly cooperate with a few issues related to Linux microphones (which is a known problem), some volume issues, a few minor video issues, but one major issue when we had to switch rooms because the standard room locked up. The group seemed to roll with it and in addition to the normal drinking we’ve been doing every meeting, we had some of the best conversation yet. We even had some late comers from “down under”.

Topics ranged from Ghost Adventures, Michael Shermer’s open letter to Bill Maher, the latest episode of Mr. Deity, Deepak Chopra, “huge tracks of land“, Halloween Costumes, and how to waste office time.

Will we be doing another Friday night next week or back to Wednesdays?

I was planning to go back to the Wednesday schedule, but I’m all for moving to Friday instead if that works better. (especially for staying up late for our friends in other TZs)

For the Linux folk out there:

The issue is with Flash 10 (a.k.a. the Flash that broke the internet). Evidently, you can downgrade your version of Flash 9 via some backport (check the Ubuntu forums for a how-to).

I have gotten video to work intermittently with Flash 10 and Firefox 3.0xx and Firefox 3.5xx Beta. I have not tried Firefox 3.6 Alpha. Audio does not work.

To get audio to work, I actually ran Firefox 3.5 in Windows XP in VitualBox. However, there were serious lag issues and my HP webcam was not recognized. This may be due to my ignorance in VirtualBox. I did some brief research and have not turned up any solution as of yet.

I will continue to look for a solution (as time allows) and I’ll post any instructions to get things working as soon as I find them or figure them out. Unfortunately, there may not be an answer until a newer version of Flash is put out. We’ll have to see.
