Special Guest(s): Derek and Swoopy May 21 at 9pm EDT

Announcing “special guests”: Derek Colanduno and Robynn “Swoopy” McCarthy. They will be joining us on Friday, May 21st at 9pm EDT for a few hours to answer your questions in ‘virtual’ person.

For over five years (happy anniversary guys) and 129 episodes (as of today), these two podcasting pioneers have been bringing the awesome to the ‘nets as hosts of Skepticality, the official podcast of SKEPTIC magazine.

Skepticality — the pioneering original skeptics podcast — is a top-rated audio talk show dedicated to skeptical topics and interviews. Each episode, Skepticality hosts Derek & Swoopy enlighten listeners with interviews and information on science and skepticism. Previous episodes have included guests such as James Randi, Phil Plait, Marc Zimmer, Jennifer Michael Hecht, Michael Shermer, Seth Shostak, Benjamin Radford, Tom Flynn, Ann Druyan, Bob Carroll and Lawrence Krauss.” – from Skeptic.com

Derek Colanduno — Your skeptical host, grew up in Las Vegas. That explains just about everything. Too close to Area 51 and nothing he could do about it. Raised by his New Jersey parents to question the world around him, Derek has been seeking truth in every day things, for as long as he can remember. In his day job, Derek works for an Environmental Engineering firm as a Regional IT Consultant. For fun and sometimes profit, he’s a 3d graphics developer, audio engineer, and HD video editor. (batpig studios) Derek has contributed to several other podcasts including The Pickle Round-Up for podcastpickle.com and AMP’d the weekly music review show for the Association of Independent Music Podcasters. He is currently one of the co-hosts of the Dragon-Pod podcast, The Official Podcast of Dragon*Con. Derek is currently spending his time rebuilding his super-genius brain following his 09/08/05 brain overload and subsequent inner-cranial explosion. Derek 2.5 is in final beta testing. Derek is the Director of Skeptrack, a programming track devoted to skepticism at Dragon*Con (the world’s largest culture convention) which is held in Atlanta, Georgia every Labor Day weekend.” – from Skepticality.com

Robynn “Swoopy” McCarthy — Co-host Swoopy is skeptical of many things, but mostly Derek. Previously her Skepticality contributions included the fun stuff like Whimsicality, and all of the music that is featured on the show. After her accomplished coup d’ état of 2006, Swoopy became a one woman podcasting machine and now does all the writing, most of the research and all of the editing and post-production on the program. Swoopy is the Co-Director of Skeptrack, a programming track devoted to skepticism at Dragon*Con (the world’s largest culture convention) which is held in Atlanta, Georgia every Labor Day weekend. Additionally, she is also the Director of the Podcasting: Now and Beyond programming track, also at Dragon*Con. A previous podcast Projekt Podkast for the Projekt darkwave music label was discontinued after one season due to personal time constraints. Swoopy does occasionally contribute along with Derek to the Dragon-Pod podcast, the official Podcast of Dragon*Con. For fun and profit, she works in audio editing, graphic design, digital composition, cinematography, still photography, fine arts including oils, acrylics, charcoal, and pen & ink drawing. In her spare time, when she had spare time, Swoopy enjoyed ballet, composing spooky electronic music and staring longingly at her collection of Howard Dean campaign posters.” – from Skepticality.com

This is sure to be a wonderful evening with two very interesting skeptics – and will sure to be a FULL HOUSE! So be sure to show up early or the chat may fill and you won’t get in.

I’m surprised Tokbox ran noticeably smother than last time and with more people.

One feature I wish TokBox did have is a “push to talk” button/trigger similar to what yahoo messenger had in their voice chat rooms (haven’t used yahoo IM in years)in addition to cutting out all the unintentional background noise the push-to-talk could also be made to indicate which users are currently sending voice to the room which would make it much easier to keep track of the conversation. However such a system should still allow multiple people to speak simultaneously in-order to maintain a natural conversation (i.e not like a two-way radio).

Overall I’m impressed with how things run in Virtual DS. Although I don’t think I spoke at all.

Thanks for coming, Dan! Yes, it seems that tokbox has been working on smoothing out the kinks and gradually getting better (although the new POTS call-in feature isn’t quite there yet).
